The stabilisation of our North West Bawn Wall Turret is nearing completion. Fresh lime mortar and new brick work has been applied to stabilise and strengthen the condition of the turret, allowing it to stand for years to come. Many people ask why modern bricks are used instead of old stone. The aim of this conservation work is not to replicate the original construction of the turret but rather to secure as much of the original as possible. For future generations, it is important for us to show a clear difference between the original structure and any interventions that we have made this year. The bricks will be concealed beneath lime but any future conservators will clearly be able to distinguish between 16th century stone and 21st century bricks.
