Join our historian Daniel this Saturday April 12th at 10:30 for a guided tour of Howth Castle's Rhododendron Gardens, Aideen's Grave and Muck Rock in celebration of Rhododendron Week 2025.
Rhododendron Week runs from April 7th - 13th each year. This year, our resident historian, Daniel, would like to welcome you on a guided walking tour through the famous Howth Demesne Rhododendrons here on the grounds of Howth Castle. This tour will also include a visit to Aideen's Grave and to the summit of Muck Rock.
The rhododendrons were planted on the demesne over 170 years ago and are now world renowned. H.G Wells once described them, and Muck Rock, as 'one of the most beautiful views in the world'. From Wells, James Joyce and Samuel Ferguson, you will hear stories of literary greats and the history of planting on the Howth Demesne.
Along the way, you will stop at Aideen's Grave, a Neolithic portal tomb or Dolmen constructed in the early Neolithic period around 3700BC. You will then continue along the walking trail to the summit of Muck Rock where we will have spectacular views over Howth, Ireland's Eye, Lambay and Dublin Bay.
The tour will be approximately 1 hour and please make sure to wear appropriate clothing and footwear for an outdoor, up-hill walking trail. There is no solid pathway and can be mucky when wet!
PLEASE NOTE: THE TOUR WILL BEGIN OUTSIDE THE DEER PARK CAFÉ BAR AT THE TOP OF THE HOWTH CASTLE ESTATE. THERE IS AMPLE PARKING AT THE CAFÉ BAR.
