Heritage Week at Howth Castle

We are really looking forward to celebrating Heritage week here on the Estate. National Heritage Week is an annual, nine-day celebration held in Ireland, organised by the Heritage Council to shine a light on the nation’s rich cultural, natural, and built heritage. It is part of the broader European Heritage Days initiative, opening up landmarks (some of which are usually closed to the public), offering events from guided tours and storytelling to garden walks and conservation workshops. Thousands of events are hosted by community groups, heritage sites, and volunteers across Ireland, aiming to educate, inspire, and foster appreciation for what shapes Ireland’s identity and landscapes. Daniel will be running Heritage Week Tours of Howth Castle and the Transport Museum are holding an Open Day on 23 August, 12pm - 5pm.

The transport Museum will have a display of commercial vehicles in the forecourt of the museum . There will also be giving a Power Point presentation at 1 .00 pm , 2.30 pm and 4.00 pm which explores the foundation of our road transport heritage . Don't miss out on this opportunity to learn about our local transport heritage. Pictured below are some photos of examples of what the Transport Museum have in their collection.

In Howth Castle itself, you can step back in time and uncover over 800 years of history on a guided tour of the interior, led by our knowledgeable historian, Daniel Eglington-Carey. This castle has been home to the St. Lawrence family since 1177. As Lords and later Earls of Howth, their legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of Irish history. Over the centuries, the castle has evolved through generations of architectural additions, reflecting the changing styles and fortunes of its inhabitants.

Having remained a private residence until recently, Howth Castle offers a rare glimpse behind closed doors at one of Ireland’s most historically significant homes. While the castle is currently unfurnished and awaiting restoration, its stories, character, and striking architectural details remain as captivating as ever.

Tours of Howth Castle for Heritage week will take place on Thursday 21st and Friday 22 August, 11am - 11:30am
