This talk by Daniel Eglington-Carey was one of four lectures in the History at the Library Day series on 5th October, Fingal Festival of History 2024.
‘Ancient Pile Undergoes Improvement: a period of change for Howth Castle at the opening of the 20th century’.
Howth Castle historian Daniel, presented this lecture for the Fingal Festival of History on the alterations and additions made to Howth Castle in 1910 and 1911. These alterations were carried out for the Gaisford-St. Lawrence family by famed British architect, Edwin Lutyens. Lutyens' work at Howth represents one of the more significant periods of expansion at Howth Castle, making it a grand and comfortable residence for Julian Gaisford-St. Lawrence who had just inherited Howth Castle from his uncle, the final Earl of Howth, who died in 1909. The lecture was recorded and is available to view on the Fingal Libraries YouTube Channel through the link below.
