Step inside Howth Castle itself on our expert-guided tour. Howth Castle has evolved continuously since its medieval origins in the twelfth century and remains one of the most remarkable historic houses in Ireland.
Howth Castle's story begins in 1177, when Almeric, the first Lord of Howth, arrived in Ireland. According to legend, he won a decisive victory on the feast day of St Lawrence and adopted the saint's name in gratitude. Thus began a family connection to this peninsula that would last for over seven centuries.
The earliest surviving parts of the present structure date from around 1450, and visitors can trace the castle's evolution through the medieval Keep and Gate Tower, the 1558 Hall, the East Wing added after the Restoration, and the sweeping Lutyens renovations of 1911 commissioned by Julian Gaisford-St. Lawrence.
