Jonathan Swift: Savage Indignation

Saturday 20th June 2026

Step into the magnificent surroundings of Howth Castle for an unforgettable evening of music, history, romance and intrigue.

Your evening begins with a wine reception and finger food in one of Ireland's most historic castles. Guests are invited to wander through the Castle's elegant reception rooms before taking their seats for a special interview with renowned Swift scholar Dr Brendan Twomey of Trinity College Dublin, who will reveal the fascinating truths behind one of Ireland's most enigmatic literary figures.
Then comes Jonathan Swift: Savage Indignation – a powerful and moving musical drama that explores the extraordinary relationship between Jonathan Swift and the two women who loved him: Stella and Vanessa. What happened when each discovered the other's existence? Did Swift secretly marry Stella? Why did Vanessa challenge him so publicly? And what price did all three pay for a love triangle that became one of the great scandals of Georgian Dublin?
Featuring an original score, memorable songs, humour, passion and heartbreak, this acclaimed musical brings to life the emotional story behind the author of Gulliver's Travels and one of Ireland's greatest writers.
Jonathan Swift often stayed in Howth Castle and the show takes place in the dining room where Swift enjoyed many meals.
