Landscape Gardener

 Howth Castle & Estate is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Landscape Gardener to join our estate team.

Set in the stunning surroundings of Howth, overlooking Dublin Bay, Howth Castle & Estate is a unique place to work, combining centuries of history with beautiful gardens, mature woodlands, landscaped grounds and extensive green spaces.

We are looking for someone with a genuine passion for horticulture, a keen eye for detail and pride in their work to help maintain, enhance and care for this exceptional historic estate.

About the Role
As Landscape Gardener, you will play an important role in the year-round care and presentation of Howth Castle & Estate, ensuring its gardens, grounds and landscaped areas are maintained to the highest standards.

This is a varied, hands-on position offering the opportunity to work outdoors in a beautiful heritage setting, contributing to both the preservation of the estate and its ongoing development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Planting, cultivating and maintaining trees, shrubs, flowers, hedges and garden beds.
  • Maintaining formal and informal gardens to a high horticultural standard.
  • Grass cutting, strimming, edging and general lawn care.
  • Maintaining estate pathways, roadsides and landscaped areas.
    Pruning trees, shrubs, hedges and climbing plants.
  • Carrying out seasonal gardening tasks, including weeding, mulching, watering and fertilising.
  • Operating and maintaining horticultural machinery, including mowers, hedge cutters, strimmers and other grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Assisting with seasonal planting programmes and landscape enhancement projects.
  • Monitoring plant health and identifying potential maintenance issues.
  • Supporting the wider estate team with events and seasonal activities.
  • Ensuring all work is carried out safely and to a consistently high standard.

About You

We are looking for a motivated, practical and reliable individual who enjoys working outdoors and takes pride in creating and maintaining beautiful surroundings.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • A Diploma in Horticulture, Landscape Gardening or a related discipline, an NVQ Level 5, or an equivalent qualification.
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in landscape gardening or estate grounds maintenance.
  • Strong practical experience in planting, pruning, lawn care and general garden maintenance.
  • Experience operating horticultural and grounds maintenance machinery.
  • Good knowledge of plants, horticultural techniques and seasonal gardening requirements.

Skills & Personal Qualities

  • A genuine enthusiasm for gardening and horticulture.
  • Excellent attention to detail and high standards of workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    Good organisational and time management skills.
  • A proactive, flexible and positive attitude.
  • Physical fitness and willingness to work outdoors throughout the seasons.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience

  • PA1/PA6 pesticide application certification.
  • Chainsaw certification.
  • Full clean Category B driving licence.
  • Previous experience working in historic gardens, heritage properties or large estates.
  • Working at Howth Castle & Estate
  • This is a full-time position, with occasional weekend or evening work required to support estate events and seasonal activities.

The successful candidate will report to the Golf Course Superintendent and work alongside the wider estate team.
