We were delighted to receive funding as part of Historic Structures Fund 2026 from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and Fingal County Council to contribute to essential conservation works to the Gate Tower, also known as the Gate House, at Howth Castle, which will commence in the coming weeks. These works will ensure the safety and stability of this national monument long into the future.
The Gate Tower was built in the mid-15th century as part of the castle's defensive fortifications. It served as the access route inside a walled forecourt that surrounded the castle in the medieval period. Famously, it is the location where pirate queen Grace O'Malley was refused entry to the castle in the 16th century.
It has, in recent years, presented evidence of its age and needs these essential conservation works. Visitors will soon be able to see evidence of the works in progress as the structure will be surrounded by safety barriers and will have experts hard at work.
