Muck Rock

Muck Rock is probably (soon to be not) one of Howth's best kept secrets. Head up past Howth Castle to the back of Deer Park Café Bar follow the signs that lead to the steps up to heather-strewn Muck Rock.

At the start of the trail, you can turn right for Aideen's Grave, a collapsed tomb named for the wife of Oscar of Na Fianna. Its quartzite capstone is said to weigh more than 70 tonnes, making it the second-largest dolmen in Ireland after Browneshill in Carlow. Instead veer left and follow the signs up the steps up to Muck Rock.

After 10-15 minutes of uphill, you will arrive at a stunning panoramic view of Dublin Bay. From the crest of the hill, you will see the sea-stacks and Martello Tower on Island's Eye, kite-surfers in Sutton, and even as far as the Mourne Mountains.
